You used the word "Conservative" to describe Ford, but I see that he's officially listed as an Independent. If he's progressive and has a chance, by all means give him your backing.Bobhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11627547125516148043noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31415271.post-29939783968138804682011-04-14T18:02:43.562-06:002011-04-14T18:02:43.562-06:00I went to the all-candidates meeting last night to...I went to the all-candidates meeting last night to see who is vying to take over Jim Prentice's seat in Calgary Centre-North.

The Conservative candidate is an animated Barbie doll who just spouted Tory talking points. If there were not a time keeper, one sensed she would keep spouting them until her battery died. I'm told she does not even live in the riding.

No surprise I wasn't impressed. According to the CBC Election Compass website (http://votecompass.ca/) my values are closest to Greens, adjacent to Liberal and NDP, and far, far away from Harperism. (I'm shocked you could support a Harperite, Ken. Have you taken the Compass?)

The Liberal, a retired university prof, is an impressive orator and made a lot of good points. If we were choosing someone who looks and sounds like an MP, he would be the man. But federal Liberals haven't a hope even in a fairly progressive, urban riding in Alberta (4th place here in the last election). The inarticulate NDPer, undoubtedly a nice guy, was totally out of his depth, although I think he was the only one to mention affordable housing.

That left the bright, sincere, young Heather MacIntosh from the Greens. She made sense and might actually garner serious support in a city that recently elected Nenshi and a riding that includes the provincial riding of Liberal leader David Swann. It all depends on the youth vote and the former stay-at-homes.

For the first time since it was called, I feel engaged in this election. Perhaps surprises lurk.
BobBobhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11627547125516148043noreply@blogger.com
