The Wild Alliance is a "Reality" and a Farce to be Dealt With.

The merger of the Alliance and Wildrose Party’s is a done deal. With an underwhelming founding convention of 200 Albertans gaggled in Calgary today, it is destined to be a farce to be dealt with in the forth coming election.

The Wildrose faction has the energy and the Alliance stalwarts have the ennui. It offers a platform that is focused on perfecting yesterday. With no time to raise credible candidates or money for the election call expected in early February, they will have momentum but it will be downhill and out of touch.

There is no point in engaging in folly unless it is at a grand scale. So based on that, this merger is not totally without insignificance.

  1. There were only 151 voting members at the meeting. This number represents the total active voting membership from both the Alliance and Wildrose Party. Wildrose members seem to have vanished, as only about 40 of them bothered to show up for this overhyped "merger" meeting.

This story is indeed a farce.

While the "Wildrose Alliance" likes to portray itself as a threat to the Tories, the reality is that they will be lucky to beat Social Credit.

This is what people said about the Reform party. My guess is that they pick up 5-10 seats from the PCs - isn't that making some type of statement?

  4. Yes Anon @ 12:48 - that is what they said about the Reform Party but that party as started by Preston Manning and it no longer exists.

Preston Manning started the Reform party at kitchen tables all across Canada. He is a good man with a strong sense of public service. Stephen Harper and Stockwell Day are no Preston Manning...and are all about personal power.

Besides, the Reform Party has changed more times than a chameleon in a kaleidoscope.

It was born out of putting power back in the hands of the "grassroots," opposing the constant political pandering to Quebec and in disgust with Brian Mulroney as Prime Minister and leader of the Progressive Conservative Party.

Then there was Charlottetown and Meech Lake. Surely those ring some old time Reform Party bells and calls to action.

Now the successor party is run by a leader who considers himself more of an Emperor than a public servant. It panders to Quebec for pure political power and Brian Mulroney serves as a mentor to the current leader Mr. Harper.

As for national unity, Mr. Harper has Balkanized this country and played more regional games than any Prime Minister that I can recall.

That Mulroney-Harper mentorship is a tad strained these days, ever since Lyin' Brian, as the Reformers used to call him, was found to be taking cash from a known arms dealer soon after quitting as Prime Minister but still an MP. But the Schreiber-Mulroney Affair is off to a public inquiry just about the time an election will be called.

    Poetic justice don’t you think?
