I am interested in pragmatic pluralist politics, citizen participation, protecting democracy and exploring a full range of public policy issues from an Albertan perspective.
You don't have to read the full report to get the message. That's what executive summaries are for. I've reviewed the appendices and plan to read the whole thing at some point. In the mean time, I'd like to hear someone explain why so many comments seem to treat "Albertans" or "taxpayers" as separate from "Big Oil". Everyone knows Alberta taxpayers are also employees, investors and and economic beneficiaries of the energy industry. What is going to be better for me,increased government spending or continued growth and investor confidence? Maybe an alternative to more royalties for government would be to give the owners (Albertans) shares in each of the major Oilsands companies. Just a thought.
Albertans used to be shareholders in oil sands project in the early days...through the government. That is what Danny Williams is doing now - taking pure equity positions as the government of behalf of Newfoundlanders.
I think individual Albertans may want to purchase oil company shares and start showing up at the shareholder meetings and asking some pointed questions.
There is nothing to fear from accountability...if you are being appropriately accountable. I expect most oil companies operating in Alberta are doing a good job of that - overall.
