Alberta Venture Magazine "The Right Call" Column is On-Line.

Here is the link to the March edition of Alberta Venture magazine and The Right Call column on business ethics that I often contribute to.  This month we tackle about what to do with an employee who publicly expresses views in conflict with a company's mission.

This month the other contributors are Heather Douglas the CEO of the Calgary Chamber of Commerce and Janet Keeping, President of the Sheldon Chumir Foundation for Ethics and Leadership along with our noble leader and author, Fil Fraser

Alberta Venture also did a review of the book Green Oil written by my business partner Satya Das

  1. It's an interesting problem. The transportation company I work for has a great many safety issues that are not properly dealt with (we are in serious doo-doo with Transport Can), yet any public statements about issues we face every day would result it dismissal.

Though the dismissal would be for something else, and not the free expression, it would is made clear that the punishment for speaking publicly would be the loss of earnings. For a guy with a family to support, it is simply better to lay low, do as much to improve the situation as possible and shut up.

The problem is that even bringing issues to the attention of management can result in harassment too.

Although I am often troubled by Anonymous contributors to blogs like this, I do understand why some people want to remain anonymous when going public with concerns about who they work for.
