Harper's Base Turns On Him - and For Good Reason

CAITI-On Line is a Blog I follow that speaks for those thousands of folks who invested in Income Trusts and are disgruntled to put it mildly.

They likely voted for Harper last time. But it will not happen this time since Harper reneged on a promise not to reverse the Income Trust policy in the last election.

These people make up much of the hard core fiscal conservative base for the Harper Cons. They are not happy and have turned into engaged citizens and activist voters...the kind of people I admire.

Look at their take on why Harper wants an early election. It is all about manipulative politics, something fixed elections dates were supposed to cure. An election now is all about HIM and his passion for PERSONAL POWER. That come across clearly when you look at this list.

Wait a second here. You think that these same people are going to vote for Dion, who has admitted he will raise taxes through the Green Shaft?

Can I get some of whatever is in your pipe?

Unfortunately for the liberals, there is no option for affluent businesspeople in Mr. Dion - you know, the guy who wants to introduce a carbon tax which will cost every single Canadian dearly. Sorry Ken, I got hurt by the income trust conversion but I am going to vote for someone who can guide our economy through the rough times - not someone who wants to plunge our us into a recession.

    Ken,

Sometimes I find your positions confusing. You support the PC's in Alberta, yet seem to hammer on harper and the federal cons? (albeit with good reasons some of the time!) Is it mainly just harper you dislike or the federal conservatives in general?

I would think that you would side with the Cons. more often than any other party from a policy perspective.

personally, I find it impossible to be overly optimistic or inspired by any current day canuck politician.

Lets just hope that Obama wins!

  5. Hi anon @ 10:33

I am a Red Tory Progressive Conservative - not a Reform- Alliance type of Social Conservative I see coming from most of the Harper MPs these days.

I actualy see a positive role for government in our lives - particulalry in those aspects of society where the marketplace can't or won't work but where serious needs still exist.

I like a number of the federal Conservatives personally but not the way the leader sees government or how he governing. That help explain things a bit?

    Hi Ken,

a CWF report, that i assume you've already read, found that western canadian youth can generally be described as fiscal conservatives and social progessives!

I'm 25 years old and i thought it was bang on! It described the views of most of my friends, including myself.

Ken your a young hipster at heart!

The Green Shift is a tax reduction and a carbon fee.

Use carbon, pay the fee. Don't use carbon, don't pay the fee. Get the tax reduction regardless.

If the Green Shift comes into play, I looked at the calculator on http://www.thegreenshift.ca/default_e.aspx and even cutting the tax refund in half due to added costs of stuff (which is probably over-estimating the change in costs when you look at how low the rate is currently) I'm still saving a couple hundred bucks each year.

Given that the carbon fee will encourage other businesses to look for sustainable options, I also expect to see more competition between companies making the types of products I like to buy already, meaning my costs on that end will probably go down in the longer term as well.

I really don't understand the conservative opposition to being given the choice to pay less money to the government.
